In Search Engine Optimization there are two techniques to achieve the desired result, one is white hat and the other one is black hat SEO technique but there are some rules and guidelines for the optimization of search engines and the optimization process which follows the guidelines of the search engine is known as white hat technique and black hat technique doesn’t follow these guidelines and that is why Google can penalize the users of black hat techniques.

Pretty Simple, White hat is the legal technique whereas black hat is an illegal technique to promote a website in order to push up its rankings in the search results.

One example was the February 2006 Google removal of both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for use of deceptive practices. Both companies, however, quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google's list.

White Hat SEO Techniques promote long term results conform to Google's SEO guidelines and is regarded as being the most effective process of website promotion.

Black Hat SEO is the opposite to White Hat SEO and as such is deemed as being unethical. Black Hat SEO is considered to be an aggressive SEO tactic and as such tend to ignore fundamental search engine guidelines. Although these practices can generate quick results, they are more often than not short term. Choosing to implement Black Hat SEO techniques to increase your website's online visibility and ranking should be discouraged as your website may very well be banned from major search engines.
