If you will ask me then I would say strictly no to pills. I really don't like pills and prefer more on natural way of curing or getting well from whatever disease or problem we have. I haven't taken a single pill from last three years though many problems occurred like fever, pain in parts of body and now even if it occurs because of anything it doesn't affects me.
However as a far as diet control is concerned you are right that one should not just depend on diet pills and even should not intake without consulting a doctor as it can easily have adverse effects. Even I prefer loosing weight by self exercise as it gives please and a kind happiness which you will feel about yourself.
